Returns, Payments, Credits and Refunds
What if I make a mistake and need to amend my tax return?
If you need to make changes or corrections to a tax return, you should send an ‘amended return’ to the Department. This updated return should clearly show the adjustments you’re making.
Use the following steps to amend your tax return:
- Include a copy of the original return.
- Write the word “AMENDED” in black ink in the upper right-hand corner of the return.
- Cross out the original numbers that you want to change using black ink, making sure the numbers can still be read.
- Enter the corrected numbers, in black ink, next to or above the crossed-out number.
- Write in the credit amount you’re claiming or the amount you owe.
- Attach a written explanation and any supporting documents (like credit memos, exemption certificates, adjustments, etc.) that justify your changes.
- If you end up with a credit from the amended return, it will automatically go towards any current or future taxes you owe, unless you ask for a refund. Make sure to indicate on your amended return if you want a refund.
